Peter Dahmen
The Art of Unfolding
Designer and paper artist Peter Dahmen, born in 1967, studied communication design at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund, Germany. Since his student time, he has been passionately designing three-dimensional folding objects made of paper and cardboard.
As an independent designer, he creates prototypes for pop-up sculptures in all conceivable sizes and for the most diverse purposes. Many of his designs are produced in large editions, but he also designs exclusive one-off pieces. Some of his exclusive pop-up card designs became bestsellers at the MoMA Store in New York.
In his artistic works, he likes to focus on the process of transformation. Some of his works create the illusion of movement only through the interaction of light and shadow and by changing the viewer's angle of vision. It is impossible to grasp these objects in their entirety at a single glance. Only by changing the angle of view – that is, only by moving the viewer – can the colorfulness of the paper sculptures gradually be fully grasped.
