Richard Taylor investigates nature’s patterns across diverse disciplines (including architecture, art, bioengineering, neuroscience, and physics) with a focus on bio-inspired fractals. As Director of Fractals Research, he leads a company that develops innovative, interdisciplinary projects, including stress-reducing patterns for the built environment (ScienceDesignLab), an athletics sensor for injury prevention (AletheiaRun), and computer techniques for art authentication (Art Intelligence Group). His work has been the subject of television documentaries (including ABC’s The Art of Science, PBS’s Hunting the Hidden Dimension and the BBC’s The Code). He regularly gives lectures around the world attracting audiences of up to 800 people, hosted by organizations as diverse as the Nobel Foundation, the White House, the Royal Society and national art galleries such as the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Guggenheim Museum in Venice.
ScienceDesignLab
The ScienceDesignLab partnership has led to the generation of a wealth of natural fractal patterns that can be embedded in interiors to nurture stress reduction. According to ScienceDesignLab, “The aim is to generate further patterns in the form of the Fractal Library that will find applications with architects, interior designers, and product manufacturers in diverse environments such as workplace, public, educational and healthcare facilities. We hope that through this commitment to fractal design, we will encourage well-being and improve diverse task performances through concentration restoration.”
